HOW TO PROVIDE FIRST AID FOR A POISONS VICTIM?

Providing first aid for a poison victim can vary depending on the type of poison involved. However, here are some general steps to follow:

Call for emergency medical help immediately (NSW Poisons Information Centre, phone 13 11 26). In many cases, time is of the essence and quick medical attention can save a life.

If the poison is on the victim's skin or clothing, remove any contaminated clothing and rinse the affected area with running water for at least 20 minutes.

If the poison was ingested, do not induce vomiting unless instructed to do so by a medical professional. Some poisons can cause more harm if vomited up.

If the victim is unconscious, check their breathing and pulse. If they are not breathing, begin CPR.

Try to identify the type of poison involved and relay this information to the medical professionals when they arrive. If possible, gather any containers or labels for the poison for the medical professionals to review.

Keep the victim calm and comfortable until help arrives.

It’s important to note that providing first aid for a poison victim can be dangerous, especially if the poison is toxic or if you are unsure of what to do. Always seek immediate medical attention and follow the advice of medical professionals.
